An interesting thread posted over at the NeoGaf forums features some retro game box art that still looks good, even by today’s standards. What is it about box art that fascinates gamers? Does the box art influence your decision to buy the game? I’d be inclined to say “no” but nice packaging doesn’t do any harm to incite interest. Take this awesome Mortal Kombat cover for instance:
What’s not to love about that? I’ve never even owned a SEGA Genesis, I wouldn’t even know what one looks like! But one look at the artwork on that box and I’m interested! Perhaps pretty pictures pwn me more than I thought ![]()
This image for Electronic Arts’ Wasteland for the Apple II looks equally as good – it kinda makes you want to play the game just to find out what the ‘Wasteland’ is all about…
I’m not sure if collecting old box art is something gamers do these days, but it’s nice to see that even way back then, great artwork was helping to promote videogames the same way it still does today.
