Today we were invited to settle down in the very cool surroundings of the Sony game room to get quality time with upcoming PlayStation 3 shooter, Resistance 3. If you’re wanting to avoid spoilers, you might want to stop reading right about now.
The story focuses on Joseph Capelli who is the main protagonist in R3. What remains of the resistance has now been forced underground where Joseph is also joined by his wife and young son. Playing as Joseph, you’re thrust right into the thick of the fight against the Chimera, who are slowly attempting to infiltrate and destroy what is left of the resistance forces.
Playing on a 3D capable Sony Television gives you the option to play the game through in 3D (which takes some getting used to!) It’s definitely not like watching 3D movies and can be a little disorientating at first. Still, it’s nice to have the option to do so if you want. You can also hook up the Sony Sharpshooter instead of the standard controller for that added bit of immersive gameplay.
The campaign is split into several chapters and we were able to play through the first five. Each chapter involves fighting your way through an onslaught of various Chimeran enemies including one that flies (which is a little more challenging to kill).
The fire-fights are one of the most exciting portions of the campaign, especially when you’re drawn outside of surrounding cover. The use of several different weapons requires you to be more stealthy than usual, which I found refreshing. It gets a little stale always “running and gunning” your way around enemies without having to think.
The different weapons you’ll employ will also make the fight sequences a lot more interesting. You’ll be able to cut through Chimeran fighters with both new and familiar weapons including the Marksman, various grenades (the new shrapnel grenade is particularly nasty), the Bullseye and for close encounters, the Magnum.
Like any shooter, weapons play an important part and familiarising yourself with as many of these weapons as possible will make it easier. With multiple Chimeran fighters shooting at you from every direction, you’ll also need to be aware of where to pick up health viles and ammo (don’t run out like I did).
I enjoyed what I played of Resistance 3. If you’re a fan of the franchise, you’ll be pleased to know that the upcoming title looks great and takes a slightly different direction with Joseph Capelli as the protagonist. The fundamental elements of a good shooter are there as well as a decent storyline for those who enjoy campaign gameplay.
I have also been advised that multiplayer will feature in the final release. So mark September 8th in your calendars! Resistance 3 is coming…
